Understanding Menopause and Perimenopause
What Is Menopause?
Menopause is defined as the point when your periods have stopped for 12 consecutive months. This usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age. However, the journey often starts much earlier.
What Is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause, where hormones begin to fluctuate and symptoms can start. This stage can last 4–8 years, with symptoms often starting in your late 30s or 40s.
Common Symptoms We Can Help With:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Mood swings, anxiety or low motivation
- Brain fog, poor concentration or memory issues
- Disturbed sleep and fatigue
- Vaginal dryness and discomfort
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Reduced libido or confidence
- Weight gain or slowed metabolism
If you’ve felt “off” but been told you’re “too young for menopause,” you’re not imagining it — and you’re not alone. We’re here to help.
FAQ's
What’s the difference between menopause and perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the lead-up to menopause, when hormone levels change and symptoms begin — even while periods continue. Menopause is reached when periods have stopped for 12 months.
Do I need blood tests to confirm menopause?
Not always. If you’re over 45 with typical symptoms, we often diagnose based on your history. Under 45s or early menopause may benefit from testing.
Can I book if I’m still having periods?
Absolutely. Many of our patients are in perimenopause and looking for clarity and support before their periods stop.
Is HRT safe?
For most women, yes. We’ll talk you through benefits, risks, and alternatives so you can make an informed choice.
Can you support early or surgical menopause?
Yes. We provide tailored care for women who’ve experienced menopause early or due to surgery or cancer treatment.
How long do menopause symptoms last?
The duration of menopause symptoms varies for each individual. On average, symptoms can persist for about four years after your last period, but some women experience them for up to a decade or longer. Common symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, and sleep disturbances may gradually lessen over time. However, certain issues, such as vaginal dryness or joint pain, can continue into postmenopause. At Doghurst Clinic, we provide ongoing support to help you manage these symptoms effectively throughout your menopause journey.
What are the early signs of perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, often beginning in your 40s but sometimes earlier. Early signs include:
- Irregular or heavier periods
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability
- Sleep disturbances
- Brain fog and memory lapses
- Decreased libido
- Weight gain or bloating
- Breast tenderness
These symptoms result from fluctuating hormone levels and can be mistaken for other health issues. If you’re experiencing these changes, our clinic offers comprehensive evaluations to determine if perimenopause is the cause and to discuss appropriate management strategies.
How does menopause affect sleep, and what can help?
Sleep disturbances are a common complaint during menopause, often caused by night sweats, anxiety, or hormonal fluctuations. Many women report difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, or waking up feeling unrefreshed. Persistent sleep issues can lead to fatigue, irritability, and decreased concentration.
To improve sleep quality, consider:
- Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule
- Creating a cool, comfortable sleep environment
- Limiting caffeine and alcohol intake
- Engaging in regular physical activity
- Practicing relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing.
If sleep problems persist, our clinic can assess your symptoms and discuss treatment options, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other interventions tailored to your needs.
Do you prescribe testosterone for women?
Yes — testosterone can be an important part of menopause and perimenopause treatment for some women, especially if you are experiencing symptoms like low libido, reduced energy, or brain fog that haven’t improved with oestrogen-based HRT alone.
While testosterone is most commonly known as a male hormone, it plays a vital role in female health too. In the UK, GPs on the NHS often won’t prescribe it, or may not feel confident discussing it. At Doghurst Clinic, we can assess whether testosterone could benefit you and prescribe it off-licence, in line with British Menopause Society guidelines. We’ll monitor you closely and ensure safe, effective dosing as part of a personalised plan.
I’ve seen my NHS GP, but they said I’m too young for menopause. Something still feels off — can you help?
Yes. This is a common experience, and we take your concerns seriously.
Many women in their 30s or early 40s experience perimenopausal symptoms — such as mood changes, irregular periods, fatigue, or brain fog — but are told they’re “too young” for menopause. This can feel invalidating and leave you stuck without answers.
At Doghurst Clinic, we look at the full picture, not just your age. Hormonal changes can begin years before periods stop, and symptoms often fluctuate. You don’t need to wait for your periods to end — if something doesn’t feel right, we’re here to help you investigate, understand, and take action.
We believe women deserve to be listened to — especially when they’re told nothing is wrong.
